Wrinkle Reduction
Shiona uses products on prescription which are licensed to treat upper facial lines. The product used is Azzalure which is made in the UK by Gladerma. It contains purified botulinum toxin A (commonly known as Botox) and gives consistent results when used by an experienced practitioner.
Botulinum toxin A temporarily blocks the release of a chemical transmitter at the nerve endings which normally contract the adjacent muscle fibres. Targeting precise muscles temporarily softens and relaxes activity and so tension lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced.
Treatment of Lines and Wrinkles with Toxins
The areas most commonly treated are; the glabella – between the brows, the forehead and lastly lines around the eyes. As we get older/ lines become more obvious due to repeated contraction that occurs with facial expressions when frowning, concentrating, squinting or smiling. Reducing the movement of the muscles softens the lines and makes the face more relaxed. Shiona treats both men and women. The treatment is becoming increasing popular with men too.
All treatments are tailored to the individuals wishes. Shiona welcomes discussing expectations and possible outcomes prior to treatment. Some areas cannot be treated using Botolinum Toxin A. for example UNDER the eyes and around the mouth.
Both ladies and gents can benefit from treatments. Subtle differences are used to treat ladies, for example different amounts of product and different sites are used for ladies to give a greater lift around the eyes. Many satisfied patients like how treatment shows off their eyes and gives them a subtle brow lift. Ladies say eye shadow doesn’t build up in the crease of the eye. Other clients like how they appear less stressed or cross for example when concentrating looking at computer screens at work.
Other client’s say they love how they no longer get striped lines around the yes that don’t tan in the sun! Some have wanted to wear their hair up and off their face feel a new confidence to change their style when the forehead lines are gone.
Please feel free to discuss what benefits might be for you. The over-all effect is very natural and as subtle as you wish. Every one of is unique and Shiona takes the utmost care with every individual face. Ultimately she aims for a look that is fresh, not frozen.
Treatment can be repeated after 4 – 6 months depending on the individual. Intense exercise and exposure to extreme heat or sun will reduce how long the results last. Treatments cannot be guaranteed beyond 4 months but many regular clients attend 6 monthly. For those who attend regularly over 2 plus years, treatment can often be spaced at longer intervals.
The process is quick with minimal discomfort. days. You can even visit in your lunchtime. Veryb fine needles are used to inject small amounts into precise muscles. Results start typically after 2-3 days and are normally seen at 2 weeks.
After a first treatment, Shiona will invite you to a complimentary review to ensure your wishes have been met and to check your fresher look.
There are some medical contra-indications, which include Pregnancy/ Breast-feeding, Bleeding Disorders or Anti-coagulants, general disorders of muscle activity and certain medications eg Aminoglycoside antibiotics.
A medical history will be discussed confidentially prior to treatment to ensure your safe treatment.

FAQ
How does Botox treatment work?
Botulinum Toxin (Botox ®) when injected into a muscle temporarily relaxes the muscle by blocking the chemical between the nerve and the muscle. As the nerve impulses are blocked the muscle is temporarily unable to contract so that dynamic wrinkles are not formed. This gives the overlying facial skin a softer, smoother and more youthful appearance. With time the nerve reconnection is regained and the muscle contracts again.
Is Botox treatment safe?
Botulinum Toxin as a muscle relaxant has an excellent safety record and a long record of use in medicine. It has been used successfully in both children and adults in various medical conditions over the last 25 years using large doses. First used by Ophthalmologists to treat cross eyes since the 1970’s.It has been used cosmetically to treat facial wrinkles for about 15 years and has become the most popular and frequently used cosmetic treatments with refined smaller amounts.
Who can have Botox?
Botox Treatment can be used for treating wrinkles in men and women.
It should not be used in:
- People with infection at the proposed injection site.
- People who have previously had an allergic reaction to Botulinum toxin type A injections.
- People with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles, such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome.
- Children under the age of 18 years.
- Women who are pregnant or breast feeding.
It should be used cautiously in:
- People at risk of bleeding as there is an increased risk of bruising post procedure. These include people who have blood clotting disorders such as Haemophilia, those who are taking treatments with anticoagulant medicines such as Warfarin, Heparin, Aspirin and Anti-Inflammatory medicines. Certain herbal remedies such as Gingiko Bilboa, St John’s Wort and Vitamin E.
- People with excessive weakness or wasting in the muscle to be injected, such as those patients with history of Stroke or Bell’s palsy.
- People with chronic breathing problems.
Does the injection hurt?
Botox injections are relatively painless as the injections are performed using a very fine needle. Patients therefore and do not require any anaesthesia. The full treatment takes about 15-20 minutes to perform and you are able to carry on with normal activities the same day. Some clients actually find the process relaxing and feel that it is their treat. Please let us know if you have any concerns.
Extreme exercise should be avoided. Tight hats/helmets should not be worn on the day of treatment. Facials should not be done one week following treatment and sun beds and saunas should be avoided for the first week too.All the above risk moving the product away from the sites and could alter results.
How Long Do The Effects Last?
It can take about 10-14 days to see the full effects after the initial treatment. The cosmetic effects can last up to 4 - 6 months but typically range from three to four months. Eventually, most people require re treatment as the wrinkles reappear. However, in some treated areas (such as frown wrinkles), the wrinkles may return less severely after repeated treatments as the muscle fibres became a little weaker as they are not used. We offer all our patients a free two week follow up appointment to assess the effect of treatment and administer any adjustment treatments if necessary.
Are there any side effects?
Most people find that the injections cause only mild local pain and tenderness. Immediately after the injection, there may be mild swelling at the injection site which usually subsides within a couple of hours. Slight bruising is also possible. Side effects of these treatments are extremely rare. Occasionally, the treatment may relax nearby muscle groups causing temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelids. This may last for a few weeks but will resolve with time. As with any medicine, an allergic reaction may occur, this is however quite rare. Conversely there may be some unintended benefits in some people such as easing of tension type headaches as the muscles in the forehead relax.
How Often can I have treatments?
When the effect of the Botox injection wears off the wrinkles will always return to their pre treatment state. Treatments can be repeated to a minimum of 4 monthly intervals, but the effects may last longer for some individuals, especially if they have had previous treatments to the same area.
Will I still have expression in my face?
Botox treatments are designed to smooth dynamic wrinkles in the forehead and around eyes. Some clients wish for very little movement for example in the forehead after treatment. Different looks can be catered for but the aim would normally be to make a client feel fresh not ‘done’. The final result can be tailored to each patient and can be discussed at the initial consultation.
What After Care Advice Should I Follow?
- Ladies should be very gentle when taking off eye make-up at night, Shiona will guide you about this.
- Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas and avoid having facials and massage for 48 hours this is to ensure that the treatment remains at the site of injection.
- Avoid vigorous exercise after treatment that day.
- Just leave it alone to work.
- Always remember using SPF in the sun to protect your face from sun damage. Most daily make-up contains a low SPF from 15 - 30 but Shiona recommends SPF 50 if you have prolonged exposure to your face.
